What to do with broken laptop? Removing personal files?

I have an older Toshiba laptop...the screen went out one day, had it diagnosed, I guess the whole LCD display needed to be replaced (it was not the inverter). I hooked it up to a monitor and used it like that until I spilled a soda on it. If I can make a couple bucks off of it, or donate it, that would be cool...but I'm not sure how to remove my personal files (banking info, pictures, etc) off the hard drive. Would anyone even be interested in it if I pulled the hard drive out? I'm not sure what to do with it.
