Are lcds screen for laptops specific?

i replaced my latitude d610 lcd screen with an inspiron 1000 screen and all the parts fit fine except the latitude screen has an inveter attached to it and the inspiron screen doesn't the inverter is in the actual laptop i guess ...after i put the screen in (done correctly) i turned on my computer and i have picture but it looks inverted...i can read text and see fine.....but there's no color at all..its like all gray....did i do something wrong?.....or certain lcd screens only fit certain computers?....both laptops are dell
