How do I calculate what thickness of wire will carry a selected amperage?

I am setting up a 48 volt bank of batteries for a solar system and need to calculate what thickness of cable I would need to connect the batteries together and then to the 48v 3kw inverter. Distance will be very short. Not more than about 4 meters tops.
